BIRMINGHAM put holders Redcar out of the Championship KO Cup with a 55-35 win at Perry Barr in Wednesday’s second leg.
It was the Brummies’ first home victory of the season as they overturned a two-point deficit, pulling clear in what had been a tense encounter as they finished the meeting with three successive 5-1s.
Erik Riss returned from injury with 13+1 whilst skipper Chris Harris added 10+3 for the hosts, whilst Jake Allen won his first four rides and scored 13 for the Bears – who were without four of their regulars due to injuries and Covid.
Birmingham co-owner David Mason said: “First and foremost it’s fantastic news that we’ve got through.
“The team worked as a team, the atmosphere in the pits was brilliant and it proved on the track as well.
“The guys were making superb gates tonight in the main – and even when they weren’t they were passing their guys, and there was some really, really good racing it has to be said.
“Everyone did their job, it was the definition of a full team performance and this is a real platform to build on and at just the right time too because from next week it’s non-stop for us.”
The Burmmies’ victory sets up a quarter-final tie with Edinburgh.

POOLE sailed into the quarter-finals of the Championship KO Cup with a dominant 61-29 win over Plymouth at Wimborne Road.
The Pirates already led by eight points going into the meeting and quickly put the tie beyond the Gladiators, who were limited to three race wins.
Rory Schlein dropped just one point from five rides to finish, with Steve Worrall adding 13+1 and Ben Cook and skipper Danny King were both paid for 11. Plymouth guest Craig Cook top-scored for the visitors with eight.”
King admitted: “It feels as though I am getting dialled in now. There just hasn’t really been enough track time to be honest but we are now about to get pretty busy with plenty of time on the bike and I am really looking forward to it.
“The team has bonded so well, and I think we can really kick things on now.”
The Pirates now face south coast rivals Eastbourne in the quarter-finals.

SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead admits his side are facing a crunch clash with Peterborough in tonight’s (Thursday) televised Premiership encounter at Owlerton.
Tigers have been hit by the news that Jack Holder, their best rider so far this season, has been ruled out with bad bruising of the lung and shoulder after a crash in Poland last week.
Fellow Aussie ace Nick Morris will deputise and young Brit Kyle Bickley stands in for Josh Bates who remains on the sidelines at reserve.
Sheffield are unbeaten at home but have been run close on several occasions, whilst the third-placed Panthers are looking to bounce back from a home defeat to Belle Vue on Monday.
Stead said: “We’re up against it with the injuries, losing Jack for a second week makes it tough but we’re sure Nick will give it a right good go for us.
“Peterborough are a great side, we know it will be tough and we need all our fans to turn out in the sunshine and get behind the team. I’m sure Peterborough will be bringing a few.”
Panthers star Ulrich Ostergaard said: “I’ve always liked Sheffield, it’s always been a good away track for me, and I think the rest of the boys like it as well.
“I think it should be a fairly even racetrack anyway, so hopefully we can go there and have a bit more speed than Monday, a bit better gates, and hopefully put some points on the board to make up for what we lost against Belle Vue.”

NEW King’s Lynn boss Alex Brady faces a baptism of fire as the Stars host away-day specialists Belle Vue at the Adrian Flux Arena tonight (Thursday).
Brady is boosted by the return from injury of German ace Erik Riss, who scored 13+1 for his Championship club Birmingham last night, as they seek a first home win of the season.
The Aces, meanwhile, have top spot in their sights and could take over from Wolverhampton with a win depending on the outcome of Peterborough’s visit to Sheffield.
Brady said: “I know a lot of the guys anyway and they impressed me at Sheffield last week when we went close to an away win.
“We know how tough Belle Vue will be and I don’t have a magic wand to wave, but we’ll be going our very best.”
Aces boss Mark Lemon said: “We’ve experienced a lot of success at King’s Lynn and already this year we have come away with a significant win from the Adrian Flux Arena.
“That is an absolute must for us on Thursday. Things are getting even closer in the race for the play-offs so we need to keep the pressure on.
“But if the boys can respond in the same way they responded on Monday at Peterborough, I think we can and will replicate our previous successes there.”
