LEICESTER roared to the top of the early Championship table with a massive 65-24 home win over Newcastle.
It was the third time the Lions have topped the 60-point mark in three home meetings so far, with Nick Morris (14+1) and skipper Kyle Howarth (11+1) both scoring paid maximums.
Richie Worrall added 11 and Connor Mountain scored 9+3 for the dominant hosts, whilst Paul Starke scored 9 for the Diamonds including their sole race victory.
Howarth said: “We’ve done the job and that’s all we can do.
“The lads are determined and work hard as a team, and we’ve had three massive scores in home meetings now.
“You can only beat what’s in front of you but we know there are tougher tests to come, and we’ve got a big weekend to come when we go to Scunthorpe on Friday and then we’re back here against the champions (Poole) on Saturday.”

BERWICK completed a perfect opening weekend of NDL action with 50-40 win over newcomers Oxford at Shielfield Park.
Skipper Kyle Bickley dropped just one point on his way to 14 from five rides at the top of a solid Bullets display as they backed up their victory at Armadale on Friday with three more league points.
Chargers heat-leaders Jordan Jenkins (11) and Nathan Stoneman (10) won five races between them but the visitors fell short of a league point.
Berwick boss Gary Flint said: “It is very early days in the league programme, but it’s still nice to be sitting on the top. The hard work continues to keep us there for the rest of the season, but these lads have the capability to do just that. “Even the new boy at seven, Ace Pijper, has shown so much skill and bravery so far, we’ve got amazing strength from top to bottom.”

MILDENHALL open their season by staging the British Under-21 semi-final at West Row today (Sunday).
Six qualifying places are on offer for the Final at Birmingham later in the year, with home hopes resting with Fen Tigers star Jason Edwards who will be amongst the favourites for the meeting, along with fellow Championship regulars Kyle Bickley, Henry Atkins and Nathan Ablitt.
Edwards said: “The main thing is to win every race – you do that and obviously qualification takes care of itself and no need to worry about the points opponents are getting.
“To be honest that’s the attitude I take into every meeting – and in this individual format with no second chances in semis and race-off, it’s about racing every other rider in the field and getting the business done.”
Two late changes see reserves James Laker and Alex Goldsborough promoted into the event in place of Gregor Millar and Luke Killeen.

NEWCASTLE host Redcar in the second leg of the Tyne/Tees Trophy at Brough Park today (Sunday).
The Bears lead 60-29 from the opening encounter a fortnight ago, and bring in Tom Woolley to guest at No.7 as Jason Edwards is competing in the British Under-21 semi-final at Mildenhall.
