CHARGE AND HUTCHINS JOIN FORCES

IN what is a case of being stronger together, youngster Jordyn Charge and the Hutchins Motorsport team have recently joined forces in order to be serious front-running contenders on a national level throughout the 2023-24 season and beyond.

For the past seven seasons, Charge has been competing with his family-owned and operated team throughout Victoria, while the fellow Victorian-based Hutchins Motorsport team, with its owners Ken and Benisa Hutchins, have been competing with various drivers over the best part of two decades. They haveachieved success in both the All Star Series in 360 Sprintcars with Paul Solomon and more recently this past season’s Eureka Garages & Sheds Series in 410 Sprintcars with Matthew Reed.

Both the Charge family and the Hutchins team want to take the next step in 410 Sprintcars beyond their home state of Victoria.

“The Hutchins team and our family have known each other for quite a long time, so when the idea came about for us to team up, it made perfect sense, as we both share the ambition of going to the next step in 410 Sprintcars at a national level,” explained the 23-year-old racer.

“To team up with the Hutchins team and be able to share our resources is the ideal situation for the both of us, as being able to pool our equipment together is hopefully going to allow us to tackle the national scene and be competitive.” Just like Charge, Hutchins is excited about teaming up with the young talent and his family operation.

“Jordyn is rated as one of Victoria’s top runners and he has done a great job running with his family team since debuting as a 16 year old, and being able to team up is certainly an exciting opportunity for the both of us,” he enthused.

“I’m very proud of the fact that I have been able to win the All Star Series and the Eureka Series, but I’m looking forward to ramping up our program with Jordyn and his family and taking on the national scene.”

The man who was responsible for putting the idea of the Charge and Hutchins outfits pairing up is someone that is close to both parties in veteran racer Matthew Reed. For the Charge family, Reed has a long association with them and has acted as a driver mentor to Jordyn since he began competing at the age of six in Junior Quarter Midgets, while Reed has driven for the Hutchins outfit in recent seasons, and it saw them achieve success together during last season’s Eureka Garages & Sheds Series by winning the point standings battle – the first for the Hutchins team and a record eighth for Reed.

“Earlier this season I spoke with Ken about putting Jordyn into the car for next season, as I’m starting to wind down my own racing and Jordyn is at the beginning of his Sprintcar journey,” commented Reed.

“Ken has made no secret that he wants to get on the road at a national level, so I threw Jordyn’s name into the ring, and it all developed from there. Jordyn is a very talented racer and I feel that his family team and Hutchins joining up is no doubt going to give them the best opportunity to go to the next level.”

Following Reed and Hutchins clinching the Eureka Garages & Sheds Series point standings honours towards the end of last season, Charge and Hutchins contested the Easter Trail Series. During the Easter Long Weekend, the new pairing showed plenty of potential, and it was highlighted by Jordyn breaking the lap record around Premier Speedway.

Since the Easter Trail weekend, Charge and Hutchins have made an early start to their 2023-24 season campaign by being based in the Northern Territory at Darwin’s Northline Speedway and they have so far contested two race meetings, which has resulted in two feature-race runner-up finishes. The duo will be remaining up north until the completion of the Chariots of Thunder Series double weekend in August.

After their Northern Territory swing, the plan for Charge and Hutchins is to travel to Queensland to compete at Toowoomba Speedway for their opening Ultimate Sprintcar Championship rounds. From there, they will contest a few race meetings at Eastern Creek Speedway (Sydney, NSW), before the 2023-24 season gets underway in Victoria, where they are going to contest the Grand Annual Classic and Australian Championship fortnight at Premier Speedway, as well as selected Eureka Garages & Sheds Series rounds and hopefully as many rounds of the relaunched World Series Sprintcars Championship as possible.

The next outing for the Charge and Hutchins combination is going to be at Northline Speedway on the Saturday night of July 8.
