AUSTRALIAN SPEEDWAY CENTENARY: PHIL HERNE JOINS LEGENDS LINE UP
Organisers of the upcoming Australian Speedway Centenary are delighted to announce Phil Herne is the latest former rider confirmed to appear in the Cavalcade of Legends.
The New South Welshman will appear on night two of the Centennial event (December 29) as a part of the festivities surrounding the Ikon Suspension 500cc Solo Centurion Classic.
Herne, a superstar of the ultra-competitive 1970s era, was a member of Australia’s historic World Team Cup winning squad, which claimed the FIM Gold Medal at London’s White City Stadium in 1976. The Australian team also comprised; Phil Crump, the late Billy Sanders and John Boulger.
Born in Ballina, NSW, Phil Herne finished on the podium in multiple Australian and NSW Championships and rode professionally in England, between 1973 and 1983, for Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Swindon, Poole, Ipswich, Newport, Bristol and Leicester.
“I’m rapt to be invited to take part in the Legends Parade at the Australian Speedway Centenary,” Herne enthused.
“It’s a true honour to be asked. There will be so many great names in attendance and it’ll be great to catch up with everyone, especially, from my era, again.
“I look back on my career with a smile because it was a golden period in world speedway, which featured so many great riders. Gee, it was hard to win back then. The Australian guys like Crumpy and Billy Sanders, to name just two, were so tough to beat. Plus, we had the likes of legends, such as Ole Olsen (Denmark) and Anders Michanek (Sweden) racing Down Under nearly every season. It was relentless”.
Phil Herne made 30 appearances for Australia during his stellar career.
The Australian Speedway Centenary is being staged at North Brisbane Speedway on December 28 and 29, with racing starting at 5.30pm EST both days. Gates will open at 2.30pm.
