AUSTRALIAN SOLO SPEEDWAY RIDER GARY HAY, 77, DIES
By: Bill Powell Secretary, Ausralian Speedway Riders’ Association.
It is with deep sadness and regret the Australian Speedway Riders’ Association reports the passing of former Australian International Speedway solo rider Gary Hay. Gary aged 77 died peacefully early Tuesday morning 9th January 2024, at his residence in the Philippines, with his loving family by his side.
Gary was a long-time member of the ASRA and was a regular attendee at our annual Reunion functions. He was a very popular competitor at Sydney’s Liverpool Speedway. Gary made is first English Speedway debut in 1964, and by 1970, he was an established rider in the West Ham senior team. He miraculously survived the horrific Lokeren, Belgium minibus crash in July 1970 which claimed the lives of five of his West Ham Hammers teammates.
Whilst competing in the NSW State Championship at Liverpool Speedway in December 1970, a career ending tragedy occurred. He was the innocent victim of a race incident, receiving spinal injuries that would confine him to a wheelchair. He amazingly rebuilt his life, and moved to the Philippines where he would marry and have a family.
Although Gary’s racing days were over, he became a great ambassador for speedway. This, coupled with his vibrant personality and professional approach, he assisted and advised many involved in the sport.
Deepest Sympathy is extended to Gary’s Family and his many friends.
RIP Gary.
