Matt Gordon was lost for words following his victory in the Australian Legend Cars Championship at Castrol Lismore Speedway, Sunday, June 9.
After he led minor placegetters, defending champion Rob Rawlings Jr and third-placed Rieley Fisher to the chequered flag, the magic moment for Gordon was too surreal to comprehend at first.
Even the next day, he admitted it will take time to fully absorb what he has achieved.
“It has not sunk in yet, but I’m sure it will when I put the number one on the door,” he enthused.
It was not all smooth running in the title decider for Gordon who found himself facing the wrong way after he was involved in a traffic snarl that fortunately did not have a more disastrous outcome.
“There was a bit of a coming together with another car on the back straight,” he explained.
“I found myself facing the wrong way and in front of the oncoming traffic, but there was luckily no damage or harm done to the car.”
After starting near the front of the field, Gordon paced himself in the early laps of the 20-lap journey, sitting back in third position.
“The two leaders were battling it out really hard and I was just biding my time,” he said.
Gordon made his winning move when the time was right.
“I came in on the corner then tucked it down underneath on the low line and drove off the corner and then into the lead.” It was the manoeuvre that not only got him to the front, but ultimately the 2024 Australian Legend Cars Championship.

The top three placegetters, Gordon, Rawlings Jr and Fisher, were followed by Darren Snowden, Scott Nichols, Michael Cook, Colin Crepin, Ken Melvin, Geoff Hodgess, while Aaron Brunner rounded out the top ten.
The two day twilight fixture brought down the curtain on the 2023-24 season under the promotion of Mick and Kim Sauer.
