ZMARZLIK WINS TORUN ROUND
Polish icon Bartosz Zmarzlik celebrated his fifth Speedway GP World Championship in style with his third win of the season at the DeWalt FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on Saturday, September 28.
Zmarzlik lifted the Speedway GP World Championship trophy, with Great Britain hero Robert Lambert taking second place in the standings, just seeing off a last-ditch challenge from Sweden’s Fredrik Lindgren, who claimed his third Speedway GP bronze medal.
Zmarzlik earlier in September sealed the sport’s biggest prize for the third straight season at the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on September 14, sending him into the final round with no pressure on his shoulders.
But the Lublin and Lejonen star refused to ease off the throttle, seeing off Denmark’s Leon Madsen in second, Great Britain star Dan Bewley in third place and Lindgren in fourth place to take victory on the night.
With Lambert exiting before the semi-finals with seven championship points, Lindgren had the chance to snatch silver with first or second place in the final.
But Zmarzlik blocked his Lublin teammate’s run coming off turn two, handing Lambert second in the standings as he became Britain’s third Speedway GP World Championship medallist – joining triple Speedway GP world champion Tai Woffinden and 2000 Speedway GP world champion Mark Loram in an exclusive SGP-era club.
