For the second year in a row Tasmanian Jock Goodyer has claimed the Barbagallo Australian Mr Sprintcar Nationals.
On Saturday night, February 8, at the Perth Motorplex, the former Australian Champion won the drama-filled and drawn out 35-lap feature race that paid tribute to WA sprintcar legend Alf Barbagallo.
For his effort, Goodyer pocketed $40,077, with the $77 a nod to Barbagallo’s race number of 77.
He crossed the line ahead of James McFadden and Kerry Madsen.
Goodyer started the main event from position three and survived a series of aborted attempts to get the race underway.
He hit the lead with just a few laps in the books and towards the middle of the race he slipped back to second before resuming the lead with about nine laps to go.
Kaiden Manders, who was third just 24 hours earlier, was out of the show on the first lap that also saw New Zealander Michael Pickens sustain heavy front-end damage which his crew hastily repaired and rejoined the field, for a while, after another caution period on the next attempt, bought them more time.
There was another caution with 26 laps remaining after Dayne Kingshott spun in turns 1-2 and then were cars going everywhere shortly afterwards, activating a red lot stoppage.
Dylan Menz was forced to escape a burning car, while a few other drivers were also out, including Brad Maiolo and Taylor Milling.
Daniel Harding, who was second to McFadden on Friday night, started from pole and went around Goodyer to take the lead with about 20 laps to go.
Unfortunately be bowed out on lap 25 with a flat right rear tyre.
McFadden clawed back some serious ground in the newly-minted A1, starting from p13, while Madsen, filled the final podium spot after starting from p11.
Ryan Newton was fourth after starting from p16, while Callum Williamson, who originally started p19 and was sent to the rear by stewards on a restart for an earlier incident, charged back through the pack to be fifth.
American Cory Eliason, Marcus Dumesny (up seven spots), Lachlan McHugh (up four spots), Luke Oldfield and Ryan Lancaster (up 10 spots), rounded out the top 10.
Sprintcar racing returns to the Perth Motorplex on Wednesday night for the Midweek Mayhem show as part of a five-night Festival of Sprintcars.
This is followed by rounds 17-18 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series, also at the Perth Motorplex, next Friday and Saturday nights.
