Sydney International Speedway at Eastern Creek will be a vital part of the Supercars’ Thrifty Sydney 500 extravaganza at Sydney Motorsport Park with a specially convened race fixture, Thursday night, February 20.
Speedway promoter Garry Willmington has worked closely with General Manager of Motorsport for Repco Supercars Championship Tim Edwards to put together the cross-over promotion between the two motorsport disciplines.
“We have been working on this project for sometime to make it happen and it’s been great to be involved with the Supercars organisation,” Willmington said.
“Since we started promoting the speedway at Eastern Creek the previous season it was our intention to do something like this.”
A special attraction tonight will be the track appearance of Supercars star Cam Waters who will put his Gen3 Ford Mustang through its paces on the speedway oval. Three other Supercars competitors, Macauley Jones, Bryce Fullwood, and Cooper Murray, will strap into the cockpit of a 410 cube V8 750 horsepower Sprintcar for a hot lapping session.
Edwards believes the overall promotion will make the already vibrant connection between Supercars and speedway even stronger.
“There is a lot of speedway interest amongst our drivers and fans so it’s logical to connect the dots and involve speedway racing with our first round of the championship,” he said.
“We are also always looking for cross promotion opportunities so when we were working on the first round planning, connecting to the speedway venue at Sydney Motorsport Park was a good decision.
“Being our first round, it’s like a motorsport festival this week and we kicked that off by driving seven Supercars across the Sydney Harbour Bridge last Sunday morning.”
Another highlight of the speedway fixture this evening will be the official running of the time honoured NSW Compact Speedcar Championship.
The opening round of the 2025 Repco Supercars’ Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park will be held February 21-23.
