PHIL CRUMP TO BE HONOURED AT AUSTRALIAN SPEEDWAY CENTENARY
One of the biggest names in the 100 year history of Australian Speedway, Mildura’s Phil Crump, is the latest dirt track icon to confirm his appearance at the upcoming Australian Speedway Centenary.
The legendary four times Australian Champion will be a star attraction in the Cavalcade of Solo Legends, being staged on night two (December 29) of the monster Centennial event, as an integral part of the Ikon Suspension 500cc Solo Centurion Classic. Night one (December 28) will comprise a Legends’ Parade for the sport’s sidecar superstars.
Philip John Crump is one of the all-time great Australian speedway riders, having amassed an incredible resume at the sports’ top level, which included no less than thirteen victories in the Victorian Championship. He was Australian Champion in 1975, 1979, 1984 and 1988. He also finished runner-up in the national title on no less than five occasions.
Crumpy, as he’s affectionately known, carved out a stellar international career, too, finishing on the rostrum in the 1976 World Final in Poland (in front of 130,000 spectators) and winning the World Team Cup, at London’s White City Stadium, the same year. Crump was the top point scorer for the Australian team, amassing an 11 point haul. The team also included the late, Billy Sanders, John Boulger and Phil Herne. Crump also rode in three World Finals at Wembley Stadium (London), Silesian Stadium (Chorzow) and the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.
Australian speedway historian, Dennis Newlyn, says Phil Crump was a gargantuan figure on the world speedway stage.
“Phil Crump is not only one of Australia’s all-time great speedway riders, but a man who put the nation back on the World Final rostrum. When he finished third in the 1976 World Final, it was the first time since 1958, after the legendary, Aub Lawson, was placed third, that an Australian rider had stood on the podium”.
Crump, who now resides on the Gold Coast, was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2019, three years after his son, Jason, was afforded the same honour.
Phil Crump’s inclusion in the Cavalcade of Legends is sure to prove immensely popular with the thousands of race fans expected to attend the two-night Australian Speedway Centenary, at North Brisbane Speedway, on December 28 and 29.
Some of the other legends confirmed, at the time of writing, include; Jason Crump, John Titman, Jim Airey, Todd Wiltshire and Craig Boyce, to name just some. The full line-up of participants in the Cavalcade of Legends will be announced in coming weeks. The Cavalcade will comprise riders who have won Australian Championships, and/or have excelled on the international stage.
