SIDECAR LEGENDS ANDREW CLEAVE AND MARK DREW FOR AUSTRALIAN SPEEDWAY CENTENARY
Two of the biggest names in the history of Australian Speedway Sidecar Racing, Andrew Cleave and Mark Drew, have confirmed their participation in the Cavalcade of Legends, at the upcoming Australian Speedway Centenary.
The two sidecar icons will form an integral part of the Sidecar Legends Parade, on night one, of the two-night, super show, at North Brisbane Speedway, on December 28 and 29.
Andrew Cleave will be joined by his long-time passenger, Dave Power, whilst Mark Drew will be accompanied by Tina Karan, who made history by becoming the first female to win the Australian Sidecar Championship, when they combined to clinch the national title in 1994 at Broken Hill.
Cleave and Power, both from Victoria, are regarded as one of the sport’s powerhouse combinations, amassing no less than eight wins in the Victorian Title as well as being crowned Australian Champions on three occasions. The duo’s national title successes were achieved in 1987 (Archerfield) and 1996 and 2003, both at Olympic Park Speedway in Mildura. They also claimed podium finishes on another 6 occasions.
Western Australia’s Mark Drew, meantime, won two Australian Championships, in 1994 (with Tina Karan) and again in 1999, combining with Stephen Blair. Drew also finished runner-up in the Australian Championship twice; (1998 with Chris Page) and 1998 (with Stephen Blair). Mark also won a staggering eleven State Championships in his stellar career.
Mark Drew is unique, in that he has also achieved enormous success in drag racing, having been one of the nation’s best Nitro Harley exponents. He has won three Australian Championships and has held every track and national speed record in the sport. At one stage of his drag racing career, he matched the world IHRA miles per hour record!
Andrew Cleave, Dave Power, Mark Drew and Tina Karan, are welcome additions to the Cavalcade of Sidecar Legends.
Further sidecar legends appearing at the massive Centennial event will be announced in coming days.
