WA Sprintcar Champion Dayne Kingshott struck the first blow in the 2023-24 Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday night,October 21, winning the feature race from defending series champion James Inglis and Victorian Jamie Veal.
The win was Kingshott’s fourth in a Sprintcar after he claimed two feature race victories last year. It was a good start for his fourth season with Krikke Motorsport as the team chases the points championship this year.
Kingshott started the show with a third in his qualifying group and then took a heat race win after starting from position two.
He then started from position two in the 30-lap final and got the jump on fellow front row driver Kris Coyle – and from there Kingshott was never headed.
The shortened format for the night saw the drivers seeded into the feature race after the heats, with the Dashes to return from round two in a fortnight.
The first caution of the final came on when Kye Scroop spun around on the main straight on the second lap and Matthew Cross pulled up on the back straight with throttle linkage issues.
On the next start Inglis got the front wheels in the air but recovered while in third spot and moments later Callum Williamson spun around in turn two, facing the wrong way,
What followed was a chain reaction that ended the night for a handful of drivers including Kaiden Manders, Jason Pryde, Jaydee Dack, Jamie Maiolo and AJ Nash.
Four laps in and Kingshott was into lapped traffic and had a gap over Inglis and Coyle, with Williamson, Jason Kendrick and Veal further back.
Seven laps in and Inglis was edging that little bit closer to the leader.
The caution lights came on with 10 laps in the books after Ken Sartori slowed up
Not long afterwards and Coyle, who was in third, crashed out hard in turn two and while the reds were on Kendrick, who was fifth, had a flat front left tyre but was unable to have it fixed as the infield work area had closed.
He chose to resume in his spot but was struggling with the ill-handling W11 and eventually parked it infield with 12 laps to go.
Before that however Veal, who was looking very threatening, spun around in the first turns and had to resume his battle in the Monte Motorsports W17 from the rear.
From the next restart it was obvious Veal was on a mission and methodically worked his way through the field.
With 10 laps remaining Milling and Veal were threatening to challenge Mitchell Wormall who started from p9 and was looking very competitive.
Veal moved to fourth with nine laps remaining and by the full race distance he had done enough to get back to third.
Inglis looked strong with half a dozen laps remaining when he caught Kingshott in lapped traffic, but Kingshott was equal to the challenge and took a comfortable 3.269 second win.
Wormall held on for fourth, while Callum Williamson rounded out the top five. Brad Maiolo, who started from p12, drove a solid race to take sixth, ahead of Trent Pigdon who started from fifth and finished seventh.
Ryan Lancaster finished second in the B Main and had to start near the rear of the main event. He put in a huge effort to take eighth. Scroop managed to recover well after an early spin for ninth, while Todd Davis was 10th after starting fromm p15.
Jack Williamson was 11th after starting from p17, while Tim Boujos was 12th after starting from p19, Cross was 13th after originally starting from p18 and Brock Francis was the last of the finishers in his debut sprintcar race after starting from p24.
The second round of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series will be held at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday, November 4, for the City of Kwinana Westernapolis.
