One of the biggest car counts in many years have entered for the seventy-first running of the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix at Castrol Lismore Speedway on Saturday night, February 3.
It’s particularly pleasing for promoters Kim and Mick Sauer who have again supported ‘the great race’ at their venue. The AGP carries the honour for the winner of holding aloft the AGP Perpetual Shield amongst the hardware that goes with winning such a world famous Speedcar race.
“We are so pleased to again host the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix. This time-honoured event carries so much incredible history as we have outlined with our news items within the last week and it’s very pleasing to see such a strong car count from New South Wales and Queensland,” Kim Sauer said.
Race organisers have received thirty-three entries. Both the NSW and Queensland Speedcar Associations are to be commended for acknowledging what this race means, stands for in world Speedcar racing with its incredible place in history, by turning out in big numbers.
Another perpetual trophy is on the line at the Lismore Showground venue this weekend when the Modlites battle for supremacy in the celebrated Kevvie Cup.
This race honours club life member Kevin Lloyd who over the years held administrative positions with the NSW and Queensland Modlites – including president of the NSW club (2012). He also won the Club Person of the Year award in two consecutive seasons – 2015-16 and 2016-17. The following season he was given club life membership. At last count there are 29 Modlite nominations for the 2024 Kevvie Cup.
Speedcar and Modlite racing will be supported by Wingless Sprints, AMCA Nationals and Formula 500 Juniors.
But it’s the Australian Speedcar GP that takes centre stage as Queensland’s Rusty Whittaker puts his title on the line.
It’s also pleasing to see the 2018 AGP winner Reid Mackay, whose family has such a distinguished involvement with the AGP, entered. Reid, who won at Gunnedah Speedway, is the grandson of the celebrated Sydney Showground 1971 AGP Champion and two times national titleholder Ron Mackay.
It’s that kind of race with family heritage very much a part of the incredible statistics of the AGP, which was first held in 1938 and won by Les Dillon (NSW).
Wingless Sprints also have turned out in big numbers with 34 nominations featuring all of the heavy hitters, while the AMCA Nationals also are well represented and will field 19 cars. The Formula 500 Juniors are not disgraced with 11 cars nominated at this time ready to take to the track for one of the most impressive nights of the season at Castrol Lismore Speedway.
