Drivers in the Victorian Speedway Council Sprintcar class competed Saturday night, February 25, in an exciting ‘Lakes Hydraulics’ VSC Sprintcar title at Bairnsdale Speedway.
Race highlight was a last corner pass on the thirty-fifth final lap as Dennis Jones became a five time winner, pipping local favourite Adam Greenwood whom had led thirty-four and three quarter laps before. In third place was Dillon Siely another local.
After heats were won by Greenwood, Jones, Steve Horton and Alistair Bastian the Sprintcar main event had Greenwood and Jones on the front row. Followed by Millar, Alistair Bastian, Horton, and Noonan in the top six starters. Behind them came Siely, Laity, Ethan Bastian, Rod Dennison, Dave Dennison, and McDonald. Jones had claimed the ‘Wayne Trinder Plumbing and Gasfitting’ top qualifier award.
Greenwood shot to the front when the green flagged dropped with Jones, Millar, Bastian and Siely amongst the lead pack. Positions started to change when drivers reached the halfway mark of the thirty-five laps.
At twenty-five laps Greenwood led Siely, Jones, Noonan, and Horton with ten laps to go. Greenwood looked to be on track to secure the big win, however Jones then passed Siely and then made his winning swoop on race leader Greenwood. Jones, in securing his fifth Victorian title, was followed across the finish line by Greenwood, Siely, Noonan and Horton. Laity finished sixth in his title defence, whilst Rod Dennison, McDonald, and Dave Dennison rounded out the finishers.
The Victorian Sprintcar Association drivers voted Adam Greenwood the ‘Riviera Tyre Services’ Drivers Driver. Stewards also voted Adam Greenwood the recipient of the Stewards ‘Bridgestone Service Centre Bairnsdale’ Sportsman award, whilst Colin Sands selected Dillon Siely as the winner of the ‘Watts New Painting and Decorating’ Colin Sands Future Frontrunner award.
