WOFFINDEN BEGINS ELBOW SURGERY RECOVERY
Triple Speedway GP World Champion Tai Woffinden admits he is unsure of how long he faces on the sidelines after breaking his elbow in four places at the ISS FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Gorzow on Saturday evening, June 29.
Woffinden crashed in heat eight at the Edward Jancarz Stadium and also suffered concussion in the fall. He was taken to hospital for checks and underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon.
Posting on social media on Monday afternoon, Woffinden says he faces causing further damage if he puts any weight on the joint at all and admits it’s unclear how long his recovery will take.
But he paid tribute to his Polish club Wroclaw and medical staff for arranging a complex operation at such short notice.
He posted: “Ohhh when it rains, it pours! First of all, I would like to thank Dr. Domanasiewicz for returning from a seminar in Holland to perform this complex surgery on my elbow and the rest of the team at the Provincial Specialist Hospital on ul. Kamieński. I would like to thank all the staff members at Sparta Wroclaw that have helped to get this organised!
“I have broken my elbow into four pieces and again, I was knocked out cold, so I also have a concussion to deal with.
“I am unsure what the recovery time will be right now. You wouldn’t think a broken elbow would be so serious. I am forbidden to put any weight on the limb, and failure to follow the recommendations and riding a motorcycle may result in bone non-union and the need for surgery and implantation of an elbow prosthesis, which would be career ending!
“Thank you to my team for their support in this frustrating time, Raf, Marcin, Jake, John, Pete and Faye – big love!
“Thanks for all the messages across the socials. I really do appreciate it. I will do everything possible to speed up the recovery process and get back doing what I love.”
