PETERBOROUGH SPEEDWAY RETURN?

HOPES of a return for Peterborough Speedway remain alive after the local planning committee voted to refuse a development plan at the iconic Showground venue.

The Panthers’ 53-year-existence was put on hold when they were unable to compete this year as developers AEPG pursued plans for 1,500 houses on the site – well in excess of the 650 stipulated by the local plan.
Whilst one application for 850 houses was accepted, the second for a further 650 which would have seen the removal of the existing speedway site, was rejected by six votes to three.

The reason for the refusal was that the scheme was deemed to be in contravention of National Planning Policy framework, with the benefits of the development not compensating for the loss of the existing facility.
British Speedway would like to congratulate the Peterborough campaign team on their hard work and reaffirm our position that the sport should be returned to this historic and much-loved venue.

BIRMINGHAM have confirmed they plan to return for a second season in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership in 2025.
The Brummies suffered a tough re-introduction to top-flight racing this year, although they did finish on a high with wins in their last two matches, and there has been uncertainty over the future of their Perry Barr venue.
But they have now been able to declare an intention to race, and CEO Nigel Tolley said: “It goes without saying that it’s a massive relief.

“The situation has been changing day-by-day but with some hard work behind the scenes and the generosity of people out there, we found ourselves in the position we needed to be at this stage.
“Team building for 2025 is underway and I will do everything I can to build a team the supporters can really relate to and get behind, because I think that’s something they missed out on a little bit this year.
“We’re certainly not just hanging in there to make up the numbers, and our aim is to be a much more competitive force in next year’s Premiership.”

POOLE have taken an early decision to put their home leg of the Cab Direct KO Cup Final back by a week due to an adverse weather forecast.
With rain expected for much of today (Wednesday) in Dorset, the Pirates’ clash with Oxford will now take place next Wednesday (October 23), although the two sides are still scheduled to meet tomorrow (Thursday) at Cowley in what will become the first leg.

Promoter Dan Ford said: “The weather forecasts are far from favourable and the chances of the track being even rideable is remote, and we certainly want this meeting to be the epic that it promises.
“So we have taken the decision to defer the meeting until next Wednesday, and with the early announcement hopefully any travel plans our colleagues from Oxford, and those Poole supporters who come from outside the region, may have made can be cancelled.”
