SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY STATEMENT
Sydney International Speedway promoter Garry Willmington has issued the following statement following the running of the February 20 cross-over promotion with the opening round of the Repco Supercars Championship at Eastern Creek’s Sydney Motorsport Park (February 21-23).
“ We’d like to provide some clarity regarding the event held at Sydney International Speedway on Thursday, 20 February 2025.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, 22 February, rather than cancelling the event entirely, we decided to move it forward to Thursday night. This decision was made in collaboration with Supercars, as we had been working together for months on a cross-promotion aimed at raising the profile of speedway racing in Australia.
As part of this initiative, we invited Supercars drivers to experience Sprintcar racing firsthand. We are incredibly grateful to the Bohud Racing Team for making their Sprintcar available, to Michael Stewart for his coaching, and to Daniel Paterson for providing his Speedcar for the promotion. We also extend our thanks to Tickford Racing, as well as drivers Cameron Waters and Thomas Randle, for their involvement.
This cross-promotion was a valuable opportunity to introduce speedway racing to a broader audience. Not only did it allow speedway fans to see a Supercar running hot laps on a dirt track, but it also gave some Supercars drivers and personnel the unique experience of driving a race-winning Sprintcar.
While we understand that not everyone supported this collaboration, we firmly believe that partnering with Supercars—the leading form of motorsport in the country—was a positive step forward for speedway racing. Unfortunately, track conditions had to be slightly drier than usual due to the earlier Sprintcar sessions and to accommodate the Supercar running on dirt. Despite some mixed reactions, we greatly appreciate the majority who saw the benefits of this initiative and supported our efforts to grow the sport.
On a positive note, we were pleased to see a strong turnout, and we sincerely thank all competitors and fans who joined us on a Thursday night for this unique event. Your support is invaluable in helping to elevate speedway racing in Australia.Don’t forget, Sprintcars are back again on the 22nd March 2025.”
