PERTH MOTORPLEX: BLIGHT IS A TWO TIME AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION!
Feature photo by: Cochrane photography.
Kye Blight (Kye Blight Racing) showed a bit of racing rust meant absolutely nothing, with his pure talent on show, as he led every lap of the forty lap feature race to be crowned 2025 Australian Late Model Champion at Perth Motorplex, Saturday, March 8.
Blight, who notched the second national title victory of his career, was strong across the weekend and did enough to qualify on the front row for the main event alongside Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing – TVR).
At the initial start Blight and Vosbergen went side by side, Blight running his now famous high line while Vosbergen circulated low.
Blight cleared out quickly while American visitor Myles Moos raced around Vosbergen and took second.
It took hardly any time for Blight and Moos to pull well clear of the rest of the field, and on lap five Moos had a look on the inside of Blight but was unable to make a move stick.
Lapped traffic came up quickly, a wall of cars greeting the leading two drivers.
The duo dipped and dived, Moos channeling his inner Blight and running up high sending sparks flying through turn two.
Behind them Brad Blake and defending champion Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) were battling for fourth.
With ten laps complete, Blight had a small break but Moos was right there and ready to capitalise on any mistake through traffic.
It almost all came undone for both of them shortly after as Blight went under Veronica McCann (Veronica McCann – Red Hot Racing) to put her a lap down and ended up just cutting her car’s nose off. She turned to avoid contact and Moos touched the back of her and spun to a stop to bring out the yellows.
All were reinstated in their positions for the restart, Blight to lead away Moos, Vosbergen, Chalmers and Blake.
Blight got away on the restart, Moos chasing hard, Vosbergen running by himself while Blake was desperately trying to get back by Chalmers for fourth.
Chalmers and Blake closed on Vosbergen, Chalmers low and Vosbergen high, Blake waiting for either to make a mistake but the yellows came on as Todd Bayley spun to a stop in turn four.
Vosbergen put pressure on Moos on the restart but it didn’t last long, Blight and Moos again pulling away to another huge gap.
Quickly they were into lapped traffic again, while behind them the battle was still raging. With ten to go Jamie Oldfield had worked into third ahead of Kodee Brown who had also raced through into fourth.
Blight split the seam and Moos began to fall into the clutches of Oldfield, all the while fighting lapped traffic.
The yellows came out with a few to go as Brendan Hucker (@huckerfamilyracing) found himself buried in the turn two wall and on the restart Blight was simply alone as behind him Moos went high and Jamie low.
Chalmers also fought back on the restart and got by Brown for fourth, diving under Jamie for third but it didn’t quite pay off and he was forced to fend off the advances of Brown again.
With five to go the field began to spread out with Blight going on to claim his second championship, crossing the line ahead of Moos and Oldfield while Joe Chalmers and Kodee Brown.

MAIOLO MASTERS THE FIELD!
MADDINGTON TOYOTA SPRINTCAR SERIES
SUNDAY, MARCH 9
Brad Maiolo stormed from the middle of the pack to steal the lead with two laps remaining and win the 30-lap feature race at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday night, March 8.
It was round 20 of the 22-round Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series, with the feature race being the Bella Modular Homes Sprintcar Silver Cup.
Maiolo came from position 15 in the final to win from Callum Williamson and Dayne Kingshott.
It was a welcome return to form for the LJM W77 after missing the last round and having a new crew chief for the final three rounds of the season.
Maiolo was sixth in his qualifying group and fifth in his heat race, before finishing mid pack in the Midpack Madness event.
Williamson started the feature from pole after being quickest in his qualifying group, winning his heat race and the A Dash.
Kingshott started alongside Williamson after winning the B Dash.
The defending series champion, who still has a comfortable lead with only two rounds remaining, started the show in the best possible fashion, setting the Victory 1 Performance Quick Tie.
He was then second in his heat race.
The final was marred by a crash in the first turn, involving several cars, with Queenslander Ryan Newton, back in the Monte Motorsport W17, and Taylor Milling in the W25 out of the show.
There was another red light a couple of laps later involving Tim King and Aaron Chircop on the back straight.
Kris Coyle headed to the work area to replace a top wing and officials deemed he was the cause.
Williamson hit lapped traffic early and with only nine laps in the books, an Andrew Priolo spin triggered a caution period.
From there it was a rubber down track with several cars pushing their tyres beyond the limits, ending their races.
With nine laps to go Maiolo raced by Kingshott for second and with a couple of laps remaining his speed was too strong for Williamson and he hit the front to claim the popular victory.
For his efforts, he also won the Kincrome Hard Charger award.
Kaiden Manders, who started from p6, was fourth, ahead of Michael Keen who started from p9 and took fifth.
Daniel Hartigan continues to impress with a sixth (after starting from p14), with seventh to James Inglis (from p11), eighth to Daniel Harding (from p3), ninth to Jason Pryde (from p12) and 10th to Jason Kendrick (from p17).
Jaydee Dack finished strongly for 11th, a gain of 10 spots from his original starting spot.
Other finishers in order were Coyle, Priolo, Myles Bolger, Chad Pittard (making his series debut), Kyle Francis and Harrison Peet.
The penultimate round of the series will be held at the Perth Motorplex next Saturday night, March 15.
