KENDRICK’S KWINANA SPRINTCAR CUP
For the second time in three outings, Jason Kendrick has stood on the top step of the podium after a feature race in the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series at Perth Motorplex.
Kendrick stole the lead from defending series champion Callum Williamson in the dying stages of the City of Kwinana Cup on Saturday night, November 20,
while Williamson held on for second over Northern Territory driver Chace Karpenko.
There was drama even before the race started when last-start winner Daniel Harding went to the work area with a wing adjuster issue, giving up his position 14 spot and instead resuming from the rear.
Polesitter Kris Coyle got the early lead over Karpenko who started from position four and Kendrick, who came out position three.
The race was just getting into a groove when the caution lights were thrown after a series of spins and a couple of damaged cars,
including Harding who had header damage but managed to resume at the rear.
On the restart Williamson led from Kendrick and Karpenko who were both scrapping for second.
Andrew Priolo, who started from position five was running the lower line with impact and even put the W#8 on its back wheels with the drive he was getting.
At the same time Coyle was struggling up on the high line and had dropped back after starting on the front row.
Williamson was into lapped traffic after just eight laps as Andrew Priolo was putting plenty of pressure on Karpenko and eventually got the spot he was chasing.
Just over midrace distance Kendrick was closing in on Williamson and seconds later the field regrouped after Mitchell Wormall spun in turn one.
On the restart this time it was Williamson from Kendrick, Andrew Priolo, AJ Nash and Coyle,
There were a few great battles back in the pack, including one between Harding and David Priolo.
Nash was gaining ground on the low line and got the job done over Karpenko for fourth and at about the same time Kendrick put his car a bit lower in the corners than Williamson and had his first serious look at the lead.
As the laps ran down Kendrick edged his way forward and with a couple of laps remaining he managed to slide underneath Williamson with a move that stuck, winning by 0.798 seconds.
Kendrick’s victory is on the back of his win in the opening round of the series and a 13th placing last week after he led by much of the race, only to cut down a right rear tyre.
It was Williamson’s best outing from the first three shows after struggling in the first meeting and detonating an engine at the start of the second feature race a week earlier.
For Karpenko it was a solid result in the Muir Motorsport 53 and built on the ninth place he claimed a week earlier.
Nash, who started from position eight, drove well to claim a credible fourth, on the back of his 11th in the second round.
Andrew Priolo continues to show he is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season, taking fifth after his fourth at the previous outing.
After crashing out hard when in a chance for the win at the last show, Dayne Kingshott posted a sixth for Krikke Motorsport.
Seventh was Taylor Milling who is showing some consistent results in the W#25, after starting from position six.
Coyle held on for eighth which was a bitter pill to swallow for the pilot of the Merger Motorsport #79 after he showed so much speed and started on the front row.
Ninth was Farr who started from position 15 but dropped back to 17th at one stage, while 10th was Brad Maiolo who started from position 17.
11th went to David Priolo who started from position 11, while 12th went to Ryan Lancaster who came from position 18, 13th was filled by Harding who was supposed to start from position 14 but had to start his chase from position 21 and in making up eight spots was this week’s winner of the Kincrome Hard Charger award.
Despite his spin, Wormall crossed the line in 14th, ahead of Jaydee Dack, Shaun Bradford, Matthew Cross, Darren Mewett and Trevor Jolly, with Jason Pryde being an early DNF.
Non-starters for the main event were George Eaton and Trent Pigdon.
Coyle had a strong win in the first heat of the night while Callum Williamson won the second heat and Milling won the third heat.
The early part of the second heat was marred by a spin by Pigdon in the first lap that saw him spin the #19 around and be collected by Bradford and Maiolo who had nowhere to go, seeing them all post DNFs and the track crew quickly swinging into action to repair a section of the safety fence mesh.
Callum Williamson set up his front row start in the main event with a solid win in the A Dash where much of the excitement was behind him in a scrap for the minors between Kendrick, Andrew Priolo and Kingshott.
Coyle was too good in the B Dash, taking an easy win over Karpenko and Milling.
Andrew Priolo is the new points leader on 552 points, ahead of Shaun Bradford on 530 and Dayne Kingshott on 500, with all three having already played their Joker cards (drivers have one of five nominated shows to play their Joker cards and double their feature race points).
The competition takes a break for two weeks before resuming on Saturday, December 4 for the fourth round of the series – the WA Sprintcar Championship.
