One driver looking forward to the debut of V8 Dirt Modifieds at Eastern Creek Speedway, Saturday night, November 19, is former Australian Champion Scott Cannon.
Cannon heads up an impressive cast of the fast for the spectacular, wheel hiking V8 Dirt Modifieds as they let loose on the super-fast Eastern Creek venue in a full scale race programme for the first time.
He says it’s a “good thing” for the V8 Dirt Modified division to race in Sydney at the new facility.
“It’s a big, open, flowing track and we don’t normally race on tracks like this. It’s not only a very good facility race wise, but it’s pretty central for the division and that’s a good thing where drivers from the northern region in New South Wales and southern guys in Victoria can meet up in a central location.”
Cannon is quietly confident of success, but he says the racing will be tough. “There are quite a few fast runners entered and they also will be looking to score a first up feature race win this season so it won’t be easy.”
Cannon is the senior statesman in the field having raced V8 Dirt Modifieds for over 25 years and took national title honours in 2001. He will drive a 2018 Bicknell chassis car and is in good form at present.
Heading the southern entry list is Todd Hobson.
Hailing from Clyde, Victoria and part of a well known southern racing family, Todd comes to Eastern Creek Speedway fresh from a campaign in America. Great for the experience and Todd runs a Tim Morse Industries Australian designed chassis. (Tim Morse is recognised as one of the greats of Australian V8 Dirt Modified racing with five Australian titles beside his name.)
Blake Everleigh also will be a strong runner in his Troyer Chassis car, while one driver who has put the off season to good use is Sydney competitor Steve Edwards who will race a new TEO chassis car.
The Mighty Midgets are also on the card and interest will focus on Michael Stewart who is currently enjoying a very impressive winning run.
He recently added to his winning tally when he took out the ACT Championship and again looks to be the driver to beat. He is the leader in the ECS – Speedway Classics magazine sponsored feature race point score.
Going into this weekend’s round the progressive point standings are: Michael Stewart 36, Troy Jenkins 32, DJ Raw 29, Matt Jackson 27, Jay Waugh 25; Glen Arnold 23,, Jamie Hall 21, Daniel Paterson 19, Justin Watt 17, Jordan Mackay 15, Alan Day 14, Jeffrey Burns 13, Troy Wagstaff 12, Mitch Brien 11.
Kaidon Brown also has entered for Midget competition on November 19 as well as top runners, Matt Jackson and Troy Jenkins.
Australian titleholder AJ McTaggart will compete in the Lightning Sprints again while it’s also good to see Victorian girls Ally Moore and Maureen Sell will again make the trek from the southern state to race at ECS this weekend.
The RSA Juniors, featuring the budding stars of tomorrow in Australian speedway, ensure their racing is always intense, while there’s also a good field of RSA Street Stocks with 20 nominations received.
