Sprintcar racing fans will have to wait a bit longer after Geelong’s Avalon Speedway cancelled Friday night’s meeting due to flooding.
Officials say their hand was forced to cancel the combined Sprintcar Jackpot meeting because of a waterlogged track.
“After heavy rains Sunday night and most of Monday, Tuesday and a lot of flooding in Geelong, it is a disappointing decision to make with the Eureka Series round attracting a 54 car entry list which included Aust Champ Marcus Dumesny, Jamie Veal & Grant Anderson just to name a few, lamented the Drew Bros,” a statement on the Avalon Raceway read.
“And just to rub salt into the wounds it looks like Friday is going to be the best day of the week.”
Event Co-ordinator Jeff Drew said it’s another frustrating blow for the venue, which has been closed since the start of the season while a damaged safety fence was repaired.
“It’s definitely frustrating, it’s disappointing for the fans and the crews and drivers,” Mr Drew said.
“Friday night had a sensational field which is really disappointing for everybody.
“But as disappointing as it is, there’s a lot of people worse off than us who’ve lost houses and stuff so we’ll battle on.
Mr Drew said it will take some time for the track to dry out, with the hope that the venue will be ready in time to host the Speedcars, Street Stocks and AMCA Nationals on Saturday December 3.
“The ground is actually waterlogged and the entire area right around us is underwater so it’s going to take a couple weeks to go down.”
