BIG FIELD FOR ECL ROUND THREE

The biggest Sprintcar field of the season thus far will gather at Archerfield Speedway this weekend, with Californian star Carson Macedo one of more than 30 entries for round three of the East Coast Logistics Track Championship on Saturday night, December 10. 

Fresh from a third-place finish in the World of Outlaws Championship back home, Macedo will be making the first Queensland appearance of his 2022/2023 Australian season and will be out to end the winning run of series leader Luke Oldfield, who has taken out the opening two rounds of the ECL series in emphatic fashion.  Also on the program are big fields of Wingless Sprints and AMCA Nationals, along with Midgets and Open Sedans.

In fact, having also blitzed the field in Toowoomba last weekend, Oldfield will be chasing his fourth feature race win for the season. Also last Saturday night, Macedo was leading the feature race at Eastern Creek Speedway in Sydney before a flat tyre ended his race less than five laps from home.

For Oldfield, his biggest threat from amongst the locals will likely come from some of the younger competitors in the field, with Jy Corbet, Ryan Newton and Randy Morgan combining raw speed with a distinct lack of self-preservation and little regard for the reputations of the more experienced drivers around them to emerge as the men most likely to step up should Oldfield and/or Macedo falter.

So far this season, Corbet (twice) and Morgan have finished on the podium while Newton, who is the only member of the trio to have a feature race win to his credit, has been strong in both rounds and bounced back from a DNF in the series opener to finish inside the top five in round two.

Having endured an incident-plagued start to the season, former track champion Aaron Kelly will be desperate for a change in fortunes and, whilst a podium result or better is the ultimate objective, he will be fixated, first and foremost, on getting through the feature race unscathed.

A couple of old heads in Brent Kratzmann and Adam Butler certainly can’t be dismissed as genuine threats in a field featuring no less than seven rookies, including a couple of Formula 500 alumni in James Kennedy and Nathan Pronger. However, the standout newcomer in the opening rounds has been Compact Speedcar convert Harry Stewart, who has been extremely impressive and will be seeking to continue his upward trajectory with another strong showing.

A scan of the small Midget field reveals two standout performers who seem most likely to fight out the feature. Whilst the combined experience and records of success that Michael Kendal and Darren Vine possess should see them skedaddle clear of the field in the feature, the fight for the minor placings is not so straightforward with Brad Dawson, Darren Dillon, DJ Raw, Scott Doyle and Tim Devine, fresh from his first podium finish in Toowoomba last weekend, amongst those looking to land a top-three result.

Presented by Jamie Usher Plastering, Wingless Sprints have garnered more than 30 nominations for the latest round of their Wild Ink by Activated Industry Club Championship, with previous round winner Brody Thomsen heading the entry list. The Maryborough-based Thomsen will again be joined by his brother Steve in journeying south to tackle a line-up that includes heavy hitters such as Jacob Jolley, Robert Mazzer, Jamie Usher, Tim Harris, Ben Manson and Andrew Robinson.

Having had their season-opening fixture curtailed by inclement weather, AMCA Nationals will make their first appearance of the season with a very strong field of cars from Queensland and interstate. The three dominant performers from last in Steve Potts, Bruce Marshall and Australian champ Steve Price will no doubt continue their rivalry, with Potts having already picked up a couple of feature race wins elsewhere this season. Whilst resuming their own rivalry, the trio cannot afford to be complacent about the potential  threat posed by the likes of Matt Hardy, Tony Blanch, Nathan Tomkins, Paul Reeves, Lee McKinnell, Brett Robotham or any of the other 15 drivers who will hit the track.

Pit gates open at 2.00pm, with spectator entry for online ticketholders from 3.00pm. General admission tickets will be on sale from 4.00pm, with early racing from 5.00pm and the main program scheduled for a 6.00pm start.
