CASSIDY AND VOSBERGEN SET LATE MODEL NIGHT ONE PACE
The opening night of the 2023 Belkblast Protective Coatings Australian Late Model Championship at Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway Warrnambool has seen Daniel Cassidy and Brent Vosbergen jump to favouritism after both drivers won their respective preliminary races.
In the first of the two 20-lap features it was a thrilling late-race pass by Cassidy on race-long leader Ryan Fenech inside the final two laps that catapulted him to the win after starting on the front row.
An emotional Cassidy from New South Wales sunk to the side of his car after the win in disbelief defeating Fenech and Western Australian Jason Oldfield who was the fastest lap in time trials (Flight 1) with a time of 13.228 seconds.
The second feature had the reigning Western Australian state champion Vosbergen from position two and he jumped straight to the lead and would eventually shake-off Callum Harper after an intense battle to record a tearaway victory.
Vosbergen qualified fifth in his Flight 2 time-trial group and recorded a third and an eighth and defeated Harper in the final with Todd Bayley third and Mick Nicola fourth.
Earlier in time trials Brendan Hucker set the quickest overall one lap time of 12.725 seconds for his one lap from Cassidy 12.735 of the 43 cars entered.
The 12-lap Wingless Sprints Invitational was won by Matthew Symons in the Lyle Jeffs owned car from Travis Millar with Nicholas Ryan third.
After a hiatus of around two decades the AMCA Nationals made their return to Premier Speedway and Brisbane’s Bruce Marshal recorded his first-ever win at the venue. He came from ninth starting position to take out the 15-lap feature defeating Victorians Justin Richardson and Stephen Hopkins.
On Saturday night the 20th Late Model national title will have one more round of heats a pole shuffle and C, B and a 40-lap, A-Main to decide the 2023 Late Model champion.
The Pro Sprints C&H Trucking Series are also on the card and with 20 cars nominated are sure to add to the spectacular racing that the Late Models from across Australia have already exhibited.
Tickets can be purchased online www.premierspeedway.com.au or at the gate.
If you can’t join us in person, both nights of action will be live streamed by Fitzmedia Productions.
