CHUM TAYLOR’S MEDAL of ORDER of AUSTRALIA HONOUR
WA’s 1966 Australian Solo Champion Chum Taylor, 96, has been awarded the Medal of Order of Australia for contribution to motor sport – more specifically speedway.
Taylor enjoyed a wonderful career that spanned over three decades after he commenced racing in 1948. In addition to his national title, Taylor also is a five times WA Champion (1958, ’62, ’63, ’68, 70) and he also qualified for the 1960 World Final at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Taylor spent many years riding in England. Sandwiched between 1951 and 1966 Chum rode for a number of clubs including Ashfield, Bristol, Oxford, Poole and Cradley.
He was also an Australian Test captain and this latest honour is a wonderful acknowledgement for his great years in speedway where he rightly holds the distinction of being one of the finest speedway riders Australia has ever produced.
Former Sprintcar driver and long time Mount Gambier speedway administrator Bill Barrows was also included in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List as OAM recipient.
